_a night of festival friendly acoustica and caustic alternatives
Calm of Zero (ex Echobelly)
Sonya Aurora Madan and Glenn Johansson are Calm of Zero. An idea that has yet to fully evolve, would be one way of describing Calm of Zero, a star crossed love-child, born out of the ashes of their former incarnation as Echobelly, could be another. Either way, what has come to exist is an expression of songwriting energy which has honed its temperament away from the current Pop Factor/X Idol by numbers singalonga blandness and chosen a mellifluous subtlety, rare today, as its agenda. Acoustic Sessions 1 is the title of their first musical outing, a mini album of six songs, recorded in London with a six string guitar, a twelve string guitar and the barest of embellishments.
Captain Angelo formed amid the Tuition fees riots and snowstorms of late 2010. Front man and songwriter Miles-Alex Peckover, decided to craft an organic sound that brought lyrical content and storytelling to the fore. In the lyrics there is a distinct voice in the form of the ‘Guitar Boy’ - torn between a love of natural beauty and the antics of his London at night. His brother, Jonathan Peckover, weaves smokey trumpet melodies around the finger picked guitar while the lilting, angelic voice of Rose Betts duels with the husky, weather beaten lyrics. To add to the textures on display they recruited the quixotic multi instrumentalist Thomas Bush to tangle it all in autoharp and drizzled clarinet. Providing the foundation of this beautiful mess are Geoffrey Threadgold and Nigel Bancroft, providing bass and percussion - always driving and building underneath with a thudding blend of jazz and blues. The hub of the band is Miles-Alex’s South East London bedroom, filled with home-adapted guitars, scribbly notebooks and a piano found on the street.
Bug Prentice is a three-piece band formed by guitarist and songwriter Ally Craig, bassist Ruth Goller (Acoustic Ladyland) and drummer Stephen Gilchrist (Graham Coxon) who mesmerised crowds at Glastonbury 2010. Their influences range from Deerhoof to Captain Beefheart via Orson Welles. Ally describes the band as sounding like Thelonious Monk playing guitar for Shellac; expect brutal guitar assault to sudden precipitous silence, all-out drum battery to bathetic handclaps. www.myspace.com/thebugpren
Marlo Donato plays beauteous skewed pop. Marlo's vocals have an edgy quaver that simultaneously hints at coffee shop and alt-pop; supremely balladic to wildly energetic with a melancholy edge. Songs such as 'Breathe Life Into Me' will have you smiling and dancing around before it's through.
After playing their first gig at a Christmas church concert, The P.I.'s went on to play at venues including Riffs and 12 bar, achieving recognition in the national press. Out of the ashes of The P.I.s, Mike began to build on the writing skills and developed a more melodic style.
